(beside Starbucks and Mellow Mushroom)

We think your little boys and ghouls are sweet enough without all the extra sugar!

In light of this, the good people at Jeffrey L. Angart, DDS in New Albany bought Halloween candy back from your kids for $1 per pound to complete their 7th Annual Halloween Candy Buyback! This year Jeffrey L. Angart collected an estimated 250 pounds of candy for our heroes overseas, along with over 100 cards that were made during our Candy Buyback and the Heit Center’s Annual “Trick, Its a Treat Event”.

The Candy Buyback started in 2009 when Operation Gratitude,  a company that says “Thank You” to our troops, grabbed our attention with their Halloween Candy Buyback.  The purpose of this Buyback event is two-fold for us.  First, we send  the collected candy to our troops through care packages and secondly, it gets the candy away from the kids (after the parents eat their favorites too!).  This is our 3rd year including the handmade cards with our candy, after realizing these words and acts of kindness could raise the spirits of our troops.

A local group gladly accepts the wrapped candy that we collect from the Candy Buyback to include in military care packages. This local group of dedicated wives and mothers, called Buckeye Military Moms, regularly sends care packages to our men and women serving our country.  “It’s a nice treat to open a box of necessities, and see some candy along with a card from a child” stated one military member.  To know that a complete stranger is thinking of them helps to lift their spirits.

The amount of candy collected at Halloween can be “haunting”.  But, a child needs to learn to manage sweets and to keep sweets in proportion to the other food they eat.  Research shows that small amounts of sweets, leads to better eating habits.   So let them eat some Halloween sweets, save a few for later, and next year, drop off your leftover wrapped candy for money at our office following Halloween!
