Project Description

Cone Beam Technology

Cone Beam Technology has changed the way Dr. Angart approaches imaging. A dental cone beam (often referred to as a CT scanner) is a special type of X-ray equipment—used when regular dental or facial X-rays are not sufficient.

New Albany Smiles aims to address as many of your dental needs as possible so you can have procedures handled at one convenient location. With that in mind, Dr. Angart has invested in advanced equipment known as dental cone beam computed tomography. This technologically advanced X-ray system will provide Dr. Angart with 3-D images of your teeth, soft tissues, nerve pathways and bone with just a single scan. It is used when a more detailed and complete image is needed than a standard X-ray can provide for diagnosis and treatment.

Why would a dental cone beam image be needed?

The most common use of the dental CT scanner is for treatment planning. The dentist can better plan how a procedure will be successfully achieved when he/she has a complete picture of what “lies beneath,” so-to-speak. For this reason, oral surgeons will often use this equipment for their patients’ treatment plans. However, there are many other dental procedures that benefit from having the guidance that a CT image provides, such as:

How does the equipment work?

The equipment rotates around you, in a 360° circle. This is an easy process that lasts no more than 20 to 40 seconds to complete. During this rotation, the detector will produce between 150 and 200 high resolution, 2-D images that will combine to form a single 3-D image for the dentist to analyze.

What are the benefits and risks of this type of X-ray?

The benefits of these images surpass the risks, however, that doesn’t mean this kind of X-ray is commonly used. As stated above, the dental cone beam scanner is typically only used when a dentist or oral surgeon is planning a procedure that will involve the deep areas of the mouth and/or head.

Benefits

  • Better image quality
  • Diverse views and angles that can be manipulated (on a screen)
  • A more precise treatment plan
  • Painless, noninvasive and accurate
  • Both bone and soft tissue can be seen at the same time

As with all forms of X-rays, there is a slight risk of radiation exposure. We take all precautions to decrease this risk and it’s important to keep in mind, the benefit of an accurate diagnosis far outweighs any liability.
